Miley Cyrus and Hemsworth engaged

Australian hunk Liam Hemsworth has popped the question to his girlfriend US singer Miley Cyrus, the teen singer and actress told People.com.

"I'm happy to share the news with you all," 19-year-old Cyrus said.

"I feel like all my dreams are coming true."

Hemsworth, who is currently shooting Empire State in New Orleans, proposed to Cyrus on May 31 with a 3.5-carat diamond ring, according to People.com.

The 22-year-old Hunger Games star has been dating Cyrus since they met on the set of The Last Song in 2009.

"I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam," Cyrus told People.

However, big brother Chris Hemsworth did not confirm news of the engagement. When asked by TV show Access Hollywood on the MTV Movie Awards red carpet he replied: "Not that I know of ... It would be a shock, wouldn't it?"

But Billy Ray Cyrus, father of Miley, tweeted after the announcement: "All I ever hoped for as a Daddy was to see my kids reach their dreams. To find happiness...peace of mind ...and someday know... true love."

Celebrity jeweller Neil Lane who made the engagement ring told People.com that Hemsworth wanted "something unusual". He asked for "something really beautiful and romantic".

The website says what the star got was "a 3.5-carat cushion-cut diamond ring, handcrafted in 18-karat gold with intricately carved diamond floral motifs in an art nouveau pattern".

It's been a big few months for the Hemsworth brothers.

Liam starred in the smash hit The Hunger Games and will next be seen in The Expendables 2.

Big brother Chris, who recently became a dad, has starred in two recent box office hits, The Avengers and Snow White and the Huntsman.
